Biennale di Venezia Opens Calls for Two New Choreographies for 2027 Dance Festival

The Biennale di Venezia has launched national and international calls for two original choreographic works to premiere at the 2027 Biennale Danza, with submissions accepted until 20 October 2026.

On 15 September 2026, the Biennale di Venezia announced the opening of national and international calls for two new choreographies. These original creations are set to debut at the 21st International Festival of Contemporary Dance, which will take place from 15 to 31 July 2027. Artists and companies interested in participating can submit their proposals online through the Biennale’s official website until 20 October 2026.

The selection of the two new choreographies will be overseen by Wayne McGregor, the artistic director of the Dance Sector. The foundation will provide financial support for the realization of the selected works, which may be developed independently or in collaboration with other partners. This support includes covering artistic fees, travel, accommodation, and technical requirements necessary for presenting the project.

For the sixth consecutive year, Biennale Danza continues its commitment to supporting new generations of artists and dance companies in Italy and abroad. Previous editions have featured works such as "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by the British duo Bullyache, "Sisifo felice" by Philippe Kratz and Pablo Girolami with the Nuovo Balletto di Toscana, as well as "Just Between Me and Jesus" by New Zealander Oli Mathiesen and "Invisible" by Andrea Salustri in 2026.

This call for submissions demonstrates the Biennale’s ongoing dedication to fostering innovation and creativity in contemporary dance. By offering resources and a prominent stage, the festival encourages new artistic voices and international collaborations.

Artists and companies are encouraged to review the detailed guidelines and submit their applications before the 20 October deadline for a chance to participate in the 2027 festival.

Why it matters

The Biennale di Venezia’s call for new choreographies offers a significant platform for emerging and established dance artists worldwide to showcase original work. By supporting the creation and presentation of new pieces, the festival helps sustain innovation in contemporary dance and promotes cultural exchange on an international scale.
