Christie's Hong Kong to Host Two Chinese Paintings Auctions Featuring Rare Masterpieces

In late October 2026, Christie's Hong Kong will hold two auctions showcasing exceptional Chinese paintings from distinguished private collections, accompanied by a special exhibition and previews in Taipei.

Christie’s Hong Kong will hold two curated auctions of Chinese paintings on 27 and 28 October 2026 during Hong Kong Asian Art Week. The first auction, titled ‘Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy’, is scheduled for 27 October and will feature a selection of rare and important works that span centuries of Chinese artistic achievement. Among the highlights is ‘Pine Trees and Calligraphy’ by Shen Zhou, a piece formerly part of the Qing Dynasty imperial collection and published in the imperial catalogue Shiqu Baoji.

Other notable works in the classical auction include ‘Poems in Running Script’ by Wen Zhengming, ‘Six Verses in Cursive Script’ by Wang Duo, and ‘Poems for Emperor Qianlong’s Eightieth Birthday Celebration’ by Peng Yuanrui. The auction will also present the Yuan dynasty masterpiece ‘Birds and Flowers’ by Wang Liben. These works represent a broad spectrum of Chinese painting and calligraphy, offering collectors and enthusiasts a chance to view and acquire pieces with significant historical and artistic value.

The second auction, ‘Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Paintings’, will take place on 28 October. This sale will include a distinguished group of iconic horse paintings by Xu Beihong, presented as a special celebration for the Lunar Year of the Horse. Christie’s notes its leadership in the Xu Beihong market, and the inclusion of these works highlights the artist’s enduring appeal and the auction house’s expertise in this field.

In addition to the auctions, Christie’s will host a special exhibition titled ‘The Royal Academy International Exhibition of Chinese Art 1935–36: A Commemorative Tribute’. This exhibition will run from 22 October to 6 November 2026 at Christie’s Asia Pacific Headquarters, located on the 8th Floor of The Henderson, 2 Murray Road, Central, Hong Kong. The exhibition aims to commemorate the historic Royal Academy exhibition and provide further context to the auctions.

Auction previews will be held in Taipei on 17 and 18 October at the Taipei Marriott Hotel, Grand Space 3rd Floor, No. 199 Lequn 2nd Road. These previews offer collectors and interested parties in the region an opportunity to view selected works before the auctions take place in Hong Kong.

The live auctions themselves will be conducted at Christie’s Asia Pacific Headquarters on the 6th Floor of The Henderson, 2 Murray Road, Central, Hong Kong. This central location serves as the hub for Christie’s major sales and exhibitions in the region.

These events are part of a year-long programme by Christie’s, which includes art and luxury sales, exhibitions, and events across the Asia-Pacific region. The programme is designed to celebrate a milestone for Christie’s and to engage collectors and art lovers throughout the year.
