M+ Museum Celebrates Fifth Anniversary with Special Programmes in November 2026

Hong Kong’s M+ Museum, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture, marked its fifth anniversary in November 2026 with a series of special exhibitions, workshops, performances, and community events.

Throughout November 2026, M+ Museum commemorated its fifth anniversary by offering a diverse array of programmes aimed at engaging the public with contemporary art and culture. As Asia’s pioneering global museum of contemporary visual culture, M+ seeks to invigorate Hong Kong’s cultural landscape and contribute new perspectives to global art narratives.

The anniversary featured a range of special exhibitions and interactive workshops. Among these was a creative workshop inspired by the Cateura Recycled Orchestra, founded by Argentine environmental engineer and musician Favio Chávez. The orchestra’s members, children and youth from the Cateura landfill in Asunción, Paraguay, perform using instruments made entirely from recycled materials, embodying the idea of transforming waste into music. Members of the orchestra demonstrated their instruments and shared their stories during the event.

Other workshops included a pinhole cinema session co-designed with Tokyo-based LENS, where participants constructed pinhole viewing devices to explore unique urban perspectives. The "Pixel Monsters" workshop, created in collaboration with Stickyline and inspired by the special exhibition "Myths and Monsters: Fantastical Realms of Asia," encouraged participants of all ages to use their imagination and create paper sculptures.

The M+ Restoration Film Festival 2026 showcased the museum’s film restoration efforts, supported by CHANEL. The festival included screenings, filmmaker talks, lectures, and workshops, deepening public understanding of Hong Kong’s cinematic heritage and the growing culture of classic film re-screenings.

November’s "M+ Night Different" event featured live music performances by bands such as RubberBand and Goodnight Lily, along with interactive activities and night-time gallery visits, offering visitors a multifaceted artistic experience.

Public talks were held as part of the 2026 Culture for the Planet Summit, bringing together leaders from global arts and cultural institutions, sustainability experts, and academics to discuss sustainable development within cultural organisations.

To encourage visitation, M+ offered special admission perks during November 2026. Visitors with November birthdays could redeem a limited-edition "Very Hong Kong" charm blind box with a valid ticket and proof of birthdate. Members received exclusive benefits, including an extra month of membership with a special code and a limited-edition miniature M+ model collectible.

These anniversary activities reflect M+’s ongoing commitment to fostering cultural vitality in Hong Kong and expanding the dialogue around contemporary art and sustainability in Asia and beyond.
