Whitney Museum Appoints Meg Onli and Zack Winokur to Lead 2028 Biennial

The Whitney Museum of American Art has named curator Meg Onli and stage director Zack Winokur as co-curators for its 2028 Biennial, scheduled to open in March 2028.

The Whitney Museum of American Art has announced that Meg Onli, a curator at the museum, and Zack Winokur, a choreographer and stage director, will co-curate the 2028 edition of the Whitney Biennial. The exhibition is planned to open in March 2028.

Meg Onli recently co-curated the museum’s Roy Lichtenstein retrospective, which will remain on view until May 10, 2027. Her ongoing work at the Whitney demonstrates her active role in shaping the museum’s contemporary art programming.

Zack Winokur brings a background in performing arts. He is the co-founder and artistic director of the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*), which organized a five-week program at Lincoln Center in Manhattan last year. Winokur also previously served as artistic director of Little Island, a cultural event space on the Hudson River near the Whitney Museum.

His directing experience includes productions at Opera Philadelphia and the Santa Fe Opera, as well as involvement with the expanded version of The Wizard of Oz currently showing at Sphere in Las Vegas. This combination of visual and performing arts experience informs his approach to the Biennial.

The Whitney Biennial is a significant event in contemporary art, often associated with debate and political statements. The 2026 edition was notably free of controversy, in contrast to previous years. The appointment of Onli and Winokur suggests the museum’s continued interest in innovative and diverse programming.

The museum’s announcement on November 6, 2026, confirms both the leadership and the timeline for the 2028 Biennial, setting the stage for the next chapter of this influential exhibition.

Why it matters

The appointment of Meg Onli and Zack Winokur to lead the 2028 Whitney Biennial highlights a collaborative curatorial approach that brings together visual art and performance. Their backgrounds reflect the museum’s ongoing commitment to dynamic, interdisciplinary exhibitions that engage a broad audience. This leadership will shape the direction of one of America’s most significant contemporary art events.
